FAQs

We intend to open on alternate weekends with perhaps additional days in the school holidays. Please check our website for details.

There is no admission charge but donations to help the upkeep of the box and maintain it for future generations are welcome.

South Western Railway operate a frequent train service from London Waterloo to Portsmouth Harbour and all trains stop at Haslemere, with some terminating there. Good connections from other routes can be made at Woking, Guildford and Havant.

Buses operate from Guildford, Aldershot and Midhurst.

By road, Haslemere can be reached via the A3, A286 and A287 roads.

The postcode for Haslemere Station is GU27 2PE

There is paid parking at the station and there are car parks in both the town centre and in Weyhill on the other side of the railway bridge from the station.

Children are most welcome to visit the signal box but under 16s must be accompanied by an adult.

Yes, under the guidance of experienced former signallers or trained volunteers. We want to provide visitors with a hands-on experience.

The box has 47 levers as it originally controlled goods yards on both sides of the line. At the time of closure, 19 levers remained in operation to operate the signals and points.

As part of Network Rail’s modernisation of the route from Guildford to Portsmouth (the Portsmouth Direct Line) a major upgrade of the signalling between Farncombe and Petersfield was completed in October 2025. As a result, all train movements are now controlled by the Regional Operating Centre at Basingstoke.

The last service signalled by Haslemere Box was the 0035 to Portsmouth (2330 ex Waterloo) on Saturday 25 October 2025.

Yes. It is has a Grade II listing in recognition of its original features and largely unaltered appearance. It is a rarity in being situated on the station platform and forms a group of historic buildings that include the station’s 1858 booking hall and lattice girder footbridge.

No. Entry to the signal box is via the small car park to the left of the station buildings.

You will find a growing collection of railway artefacts and memorabilia relating to the railway in Haslemere and Southern England with an emphasis on signalling equipment.

No. But donations towards the upkeep of the museum and to help fund the acquisition of further exhibits will be most welcome.

Current plans are to only open the museum in conjunction with the signal box, but individual openings of the museum may be a feature in the future.

The box was built in 1895 by the London and South Western Railway, a predecessor of the Southern Railway (1923 to 1947).

The Trust does not own the box but has a lease from Network Rail.

At present there is no dedicated outdoor area, but future plans include a memorial garden alongside platform 1 which will provide seating and hopefully some outside exhibits.

It is our intention to provide disability access to the memorial garden but, unfortunately, both the design of the signal box and access to the museum, precludes them being fully accessible. However, a video presentation, showing the workings of the box and some of the exhibits in the museum, will be available to visitors in the Information Hub which is adjacent to the station and fully accessible.

We have a growing list of “Friends of Haslemere Signal Box” and visitors will be invited to sign up and receive regular newsletters.

It is our intention to launch a membership scheme in the near future for a modest annual subscription. This will provide additional benefits.

If you feel you have the required skills please speak to one of the trustees or volunteers on duty.

There will be ongoing maintenance and repairs. Woodworking and decorating skills may be required. The lever frame and working levers will need to be maintained in good order and IT skills will be welcome. A safe working and visitor environment will need to be maintained.
