Military gauge railway

A piece of history

We are very fortunate to have been donated part of a 2ft  gauge ‘military gauge’ railway, which will be a prominent feature in our memorial garden.

Military gauge railway

WHERE DID IT COME FROM?

Although unconfirmed, it is believed to have come from a local South Downs quarry and remodelled to represent a railway which came from a military establishment.

It was also ideally suited for other industrial applications where loads are relatively light and frequent track layout adjustments may be required.

The 2ft  gauge is also found in many  heritage narrow-gauge railways, but with much heavier trackwork.

Can you shed any further light on the story behind our bit of history?  Please  let us know.

What we do know:

…is that we need to restore the wagons –  and if you can help us with this, it would be most appreciated.

Once in place:

The line and wagons will make a real impact in the garden and add to the overall impact  of the site.
